Ed Rossbach Fiber Art At Boston Museum

The MFA celebrates the works of Edward Rossbach, widely recognized as a pioneer of the contemporary fiber arts movement, in this exhibition of approximately 40 of his works. Ed Rossbach created works in almost every known textile technique during his five decade-long career.

His exuberant approach to making art, free from expectations and rules, came out of serious studies he made of historic textile techniques while a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Experimenting with labor-intensive techniques such as Andean discontinuous warp weaving, European these needle lace, and Indonesian ikat, Rossbach reinterpreted methods in his own unique two-dimensional and threedimensional works.

This incredible collection, which includes a total of 80 objects, including works by Katherine Westphal, was given to the MFA by Daphne and Peter Farago in 2004. This gift makes the MFA the most important repository of the work of these seminal artists.

The picture shows John Travolta, 1978, the author is Ed Rossbach.

The exhibition runs from May 22, 2007 to March 5, 2008 at Loring Gallery. -- www.mfa.org
