Idol's Bucky Covington Debuts New Song, Anticipates New Album

It has been a year and a half since Bucky Covington debuted a new song. It has been over four years since he released a new album. But a new single, "I Wanna Be That Feeling," was released this past week and the "American Idol" alum says he is excited about a new album that is scheduled for release early next year.

Country music hitmaker and eighth-place "American Idol" finalist Bucky Covington has a new single, "I Wanna Be That Feeling," on the radio. It's his first since the third single was released from his unreleased I'm Alright album in March 2010. But if history is any precedent, Covington doesn't have much to worry about with regard to getting airplay. All six of his prior single releases have charted, with two of those songs making the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

Along with debuting a new single, Covington has a new record label and, according to The Boot, he anticipates a new album out in the first half of 2012.

The "American Idol" Season 5 alum was recording his follow-up album to his self-titled 2007 debut, the recording that spawned the two Top 10 hits "A Different World" and "I'll Walk," when his record label went out of business. Although it was thought that Disney would sign the artists from the defunct Lyric Street Records in April 2010, the month the new album was to be released, Covington was left unsigned.

But all that has changed. Covington signed with Entertainment One Music Group. He was the first country artist to be signed to the label.

Covington said he got the I'm Alright album back from Disney but was dissatisfied with some of the material on it, so he returned to the studio to re-record some songs and record some new material as well. One of those songs was "I Wanna Be That Feeling." He decided to rework the song after fans kept asking him why he had dropped it from the setlist at his shows.

"I am absolutely thrilled with the album that is now coming out, head over heels," he told Brian Mansfield at USA Today's "Idol Chatter" in October. "It's Bucky Covington through and through."

The new album will also include a cover of the Commodores classic, "Sail On." Covington said, "Coming off 'American Idol,' I love remakes. We had Mac McAnally come in on acoustic and do the fingerpicking. It came out absolutely beautiful."

As well it should. Mac McAnally won the 2011 Country Music Association award for Musician of the Year -- for the fourth consecutive year.

Bucky Covington's "I Wanna Be That Feeling" joins a couple of other "American Idol" finalists with singles out ahead of new albums anticipated for release in 2012 -- fellow Season 5 finalist Kellie Pickler's "Tough" and Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks' "I Am Woman."
