That's right. You don't need a passport to go to Puerto Rico (because it is a territory of the United States). It is one of those little things people generally overlook when thinking about getting away and their optimal place of doing so is an island somewhere in the Caribbean. So... no passport, no problem.
The Travel Channel is currently sponsoring a vacation sweepstakes where the Grand Prize is a free trip to the island of Puerto Rico. According to the official rules, one winner and a lucky guest will fly to San Juan, the capital of the island commonwealth, and stay in a deluxe luxury hotel for 5 nights (6 days).
While there, the sweepstakes winner also wins a chance to catamaran sail from San Juan to Icacos island to snorkel, go on a guided hike through El Yunque Rainforest, go on the Zipline Canopy Eco-Adventure, and enjoy an Old San Juan Food Tour.
The winner also will receive $1,500 cash, which will be presented in the form of a check, for spending money while in San Juan.
To get there and back, the Travel Channel will also provide the Grand Prize winner and a guest round-trip, coach-class airfare for the Grand Prize Winner and a guest. According to the official rules, the airport for departure will be the one nearest the winner's residence, as long as that winner resides in the continental U. S. If the Grand Prize Winner happens to reside in Alaska or Hawaii, said winner will be responsible for his own travel arrangements to and from San Juan.
While in San Juan, the duo will be supplied with round trip airport transfers to get them to and from the hotel.
Certain to be a relief to the eventual winner: All taxes related to accommodations and airfare will be taken care of as well. Considering the sweepstakes package has an estimated value of $10,000, well...
Anyone at least 21 years old can enter the sweepstakes as long as they live in one of the fifty states or the District of Columbia.
With six days in which to take in the sights and do a few things, not to mention that $1,500, one might want to do a something more than hang out at the hotel or just enjoying the free activities won as part of the sweepstakes. TripAdvisor.com has a helpful list of 379 things you can do while in Puerto Rico. U. S. News and World Report has a Top 10 list of "best" things to do while on the island. Fodor's also has compiled a list of "top" things to do.
The Travel Channel sweepstakes began on Dec. 1, 2013 and entries will be accepted until Dec. 31, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
