Who knew that having the world's largest breasts could have life-saving and practical qualities? Record-holder Sheyla Hershey credits her breasts with saving her life.
Although they're a literal pain in her back, Sheyla Hershey has no problem crediting her enormous breasts for saving her life on Super Bowl Sunday. The Texas resident says that it was her implants, credited with holding the Guinness record for the world's largest, that "saved [her] life."
(Actually, Hershey is credited with having the world's largest breast implants at MMM-sized. She had to have surgery for their removal, according to Houston Press, after a staph infection threatened her life in 2010. Still, the ample KKK-sized breast implants that are currently installed seemed to be enough to save her life.)
In a Radar Online interview, Hershey explained how her implants took the place of her car's airbags when they didn't deploy after a recent crash. She said she was on her way to pick up her husband after the Super Bowl and driving on dark, slippery roads when she lost control of her Ford Mustang. The car veered off the road, hitting a tree.
Hershey said that the Mustang's airbags failed to deploy.
“My implants saved my life," she told Radar Online, "my breasts are very sore and I have some scratches on them but I know I would have been badly hurt without them because they are very close to the steering wheel.”
And apparently close enough to cushion the collision's impact.
Hershey said she then panicked, backed away, and crashed into another tree. When police arrived at the scene, she was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence.
But Hershey insists she had not been drinking when she had her accident. She admitted, though, that she had taken medication before the crash: drugs for depression and a bipolar condition, vicodin for headaches, and a painkiller for the backache caused by her the disproportionate weight of her breasts.
Still, she says she would like to increase her size back up to the record MMM level. She notes that her breast size has improved her self esteem (she was originally a size BB). She also admits her husband doesn't want her to have another augmentation, but says "it's not up to him."
Sheyla Hershey's life-saving claim isn't the first time implants have been credited with saving lives.
Russian newspaper Pravda reported in October that a Muscovite woman whose husband had insisted get breast implants was saved from a knife attack from that very husband. The husband had stabbed her in a fit of rage, aiming for her heart, but the immense size and the implant's silicone material -- which the newspaper dubbed "body armor" -- had stopped the knife even before it reached the 40-year-old woman's thorax.
A woman shot in a Simi Valley, Calif., incident in July 2009 at her workplace had one of her DD-sized implants as a likely life-saver, NBC Los Angeles recounted from a Los Angeles Times report. Her cosmetic surgeon credited the implant with slowing the velocity of the bullet that hit her in the chest. The woman had been a bystander in a shooting when a gunman entered her workplace and shot her co-worker to death.
In a more general sense, the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights (RFSL) petitioned Swedish authorities last year in an effort to allow transgendered persons easier access to breast implant surgeries. According to ActUp.org, they noted that it would act as a preventive against suicide, considering that transgendered people in Sweden were more likely to commit suicide. As part of their argument, RFSL offered the alarming statistic that suicides among transgendered persons denied breast implants was 30 to 40 percent -- as opposed to the Swedish national level of 1.6 for the general population.
