Finally in Wimbledon: Equal Pay for Equal Work

Wimbledon will pay its men and women players equal prize money across the board for the first time in its history this year.

Tim Phillips, the head of the All England Club which hosts the word's most prestigious Grand Slam tennis tournament, announced the change Thursday in London.

Club officials had defended the imbalance for years, claiming the men deserved more money because they played best-of-five matches, while the women only played best of-three matches.

But Phillips now says the equal prize money will be good for both women players and the sport in general.

Wimbledon joins the Australian and U.S. Open tournaments in awarding equal prize money in all events and all stages of competition. The French Open began paying its men's and women's singles champions equally last year, but the overall pot is titled in favor of the men. - VOA News
