Although no words were uttered during The Artist, there was plenty to say about the movie at Sunday's BAFTAs 2012. The silent film took seven gongs, including best picture best actor, best director and best original screenplay among other prizes.
During the heart of the momentous occasion, which is often called the British Academy Awards, extremely expressive Jean Dujardin--who was seen the preceding night on SNL (which is tape live in front of studio audience)--was jubilant as he gave his speech.
In it, he said it was incroyable (which means incredible in French) to be honored in the UK where such legends as Laurence Olivier, the legendary actor; William Webb Ellis. the inventor of rugby; and Benny Hill, a beloved comedian, are from.
Meanwhile, also in that particular country with all its gifted talents that is located across the pond from the US, other international visitors were honored with other prizes that had nothing to do with their work on the silver screen.
For instance, Spaniard Penelope Cruz was applauded as one of the best dressed for her very architectural ensemble created by Armani Prive.
And American Meryl Streep, who won best actress in a surprise move she didn't expect for her turn in The Iron Lady, was dressed to impress in a Vivienne Westwood ensemble that included a black bolero and a corseted gown that swept the floor and showed a bit of cleavage. So, in a way, British subjects figured in her double wins since Margaret Thatcher and the designer whose frock she chose both hail from England.
Also touted with her style sense in front of the Royal Opera House on Sunday in London was Michelle Williams, who wore a one-of-a-kind H&M strapless gown on the red carpet for the BAFTA Awards 2012. The pixie-haired star of My Week WIth Marilyn showed up looking cutting edge yet managed to stay classical as well, accenting her attire with a clutch by Olympia Le Tan that resembled a book.
At the same event, Viola Davis dazzled in a bright pink Valentino gown while another The Help actress, Jessica Chastain, donned an Oscar de la Renta frock that made her into a Greek goddess for the evening.
And so, with all of the above getting yet another awards show under their collective belts in a month where there are so many that one played out in California (the Grammys) while the other played out in London on the same day, The Artist was able to take probably more than its expected share of gongs from the prestigious British Film Awards while thespians like Penelope Cruz and Meryl Streep won best dressed at BAFTA 2012.
And, beyond that, a good time was had by all in the British capital.
