Nigel Lythgow has asked President Obama and Al Green to get together on 'American Idol, and the Fox show's executive producer has used social media to tell the story. Well, at least some of it.
Lythgoe, using the handle @dizzyfeet, went to Twitter with his plea to the Commander-in-Chief, saying, "@BarackObama we loved your vocal performance so much we'd love to invite you on to #AmericanIdol this Season for a duet with Al Green."
While in and of itself, this seems an odd request, history says that the musical come-on from the American Idol head honcho isn't totally impossible to fill. President Obama was in Harlem earlier this year and he spontaneously sprang a sweet rendition of the Al Green anthem Let's Stay Together on the adoring crowd, much to their delight. Apparently, Barack is not only a politician, he's a crooner as well.
This fact was confirmed by his wife when Michelle Obama appeared on The Tonight Show on Tuesday, confirming to Jay Leno that not only does he sing Al Green, but her husband also like to sing Stevie Wonder tunes as well. She said the President sings to her all the time but she doesn't reciprocate simply because she doesn't have the voice for such actions.
So, while one Obama possesses a proven set of pipes, the other Obama likes to listen. And so would the American public, which could happen if Lythgoe gets his wish and Barack joins Al Green on American Idol. He won't need a golden ticket as he will be considered a guest of the TV talent show, but he will probably gain plenty of attention directed at the small screen should he chose to take this option.
Meanwhile, Lythgoe hasn't asked the same of Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who used his voice to sing America the Beautiful on Monday in Florida. The talent seeker wasn't impressed, to say the least, offering these words up on Twitter regarding that singing politician: "If it were an election based on vocal talent @barackobama would beat Romney hands down. Mitt was very flat singing America the Beautiful.
And so, while Republication Romney was called, well, off key while crooning, Democrat Obama was, surprisingly to many, on key with his Al Green offering in Harlem. So much so, in fact, that the whole wide world would likely enjoy an encore. Ah, hem. American Idol is waiting Mister President.

#1 President sings
While many Americans would love to see an appearance by the President on American Idol. The potential political blow back, not related to his vocal or political talents, need to be strongly considered. You can hear the critics now: "Obama belittles the office...". In the mean time, less is more and you always leave them wanting more. Mr. President, nice pipes and even better political savvy.
