English Opera Wins Opera Awards

English National Opera is delighted to announce that for the second consecutive year the Company has won both opera awards in the Oliviers. At the 2007 Olivier Awards ceremony, presented by the Society of London Theatre last night, ENO's production of Janáček's Jenůfa, staged by David Alden, received the award for Best New Opera Production and Amanda Roocroft received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for her performance in the title role of Jenůfa.

Both were present to collect the awards in person.

ENO Artistic Director John Berry comments:

'Sweeping the opera awards for the second year running is testimony to the high musical and production standards currently being enjoyed by the Company. With our current hit production of Handel's Agrippina and the forthcoming arrival of Edward Gardner as Music Director, we look forward to building on the success of the last two years, striving to produce more exciting collaborations with top flight artists.'

ENO received a total of five of the eight available opera nominations: a further two nominations in the Best New Opera Production category for Chen Shi-Zheng's production of Orfeo and Christopher Alden's production of The Makropulos Case, and a further nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for John Mark Ainsley in the title role of Orfeo. Last year ENO received all eight nominations in the opera categories.

ENO's current 2006/07 Season continues with new productions of Philip Glass's Satyagraha directed by Improbable, Britten's Death in Venice directed by Deborah Warner and Kismet directed by Gary Griffin. -- www.eno.org
