Pole Dancing, Aerial Skills, Big Band Ballroom

Dance Base, Scotland's National Centre for Dance has launched its exciting new autumn programme of dance classes, workshops and events; term starts on Monday 15 September 2008.

Every week around 2000 people pass through the doors of the purpose built dance centre in the Grassmarket to participate in the 130 dance classes on offer. Classes are available in a range of different dance styles for everyone of every age and ability. Dance is a great way to get fit, have fun and meet new people and with a choice of regular weekly courses or flexible drop-in sessions it's never been easier to try.

This term Dance Base is offering more new classes to add to their already diverse programme featuring old favourites such as Ballroom, Highland Dance and Contemporary. New adult classes for this term include extra Hip Hop classes (including Hip Hop for Lunch), Linedancing and a performance group working on Sweet Charity. Also running for the first time is a course in Aerial Skills for Beginners with local professional teachers Jen Paterson and Danuta Ramos participants will get the chance to swing and fly through the air on ropes and trapeze. These new additions help to make the community programme even more varied and exciting.

Classes for children start from age 1 and up. Parents are encouraged to take their shoes and socks off and join in with classes such as Dance 'n' Play and Creative Dance. For older kids Dance Base offers non-competitive classes in break dance, hip hop, ballet and street & contemporary. Many participants of both children's and adult classes have the opportunity to perform in the annual Dance Base Christmas Show at George Square Theatre in December.

As well as the regular classes the programme contains workshops from special guest teachers including Pole Dancing, a Taoist Tai Chi Demo and Tango. Dance Base will also welcome workshops from touring dance companies Birmingham Royal Ballet and Rambert Dance Company. At the end of term the hugely successful Strictly Dance Base ballroom spectacular social dance returns for a second year with Edinburgh 18-piece big bang The Sound of Seventeen.

Every term Dance Base has a bookings day which sees hundreds of people queuing from early in the morning to ensure that they get a place on the most popular courses. Those members of the public desperate to dance also try to book online and on the phone. The Autumn Term bookings day will take place on Saturday 6 September from 10:00. -- www.dancebase.co.uk
