Following Boston Ballet’s one-night-only all-star gala performance, Night of Stars, the company opens its season one week later on October 16 with the highly-anticipated return of James Kudelka’s Cinderella. The ballet received its U.S. premiere by Boston Ballet in 2005 and was met with an abundance of audience and critical praise. Boston Ballet performs Cinderella October 16 – 26 at the Citi Performing Arts CenterSM Wang Theatre.

“Audiences were enthralled by our production of Cinderella in 2005, and I am thrilled to bring Kudelka’s witty and fun interpretation of the classic fairy tale back for our 2008 season” said Mikko Nissinen, Artistic Director. “Kudelka’s contemporary interpretation of the classic fairytale not only provides dancers with a unique exercise in characterization but also directly connects audiences to the ballet’s characters and story.”

Karen Campbell said in The Boston Globe of Boston Ballet’s 2005 production of Kudelka’s Cinderella, “It’s an entertaining, colorful, family-friendly production, often clever and inventive.” Kudelka originally choreographed his Cinderella in 2004 for The National Ballet of Canada while Artistic Director of the company. Set to Sergei Prokofiev’s superb score, Kudelka’s version of the fairy tale is not the conventional rags-to-riches story, but a more contemporary tale of the transforming power of love. His staging is differentiated by his choice to allow the Prince to break free from the constraints and superficial life that were imposed on him as royalty.

Known for his ability to juxtapose classical and modern movement, Kudelka’s staging of Cinderella displays an abundance of inventive dancing. The intricate choreography appears simple and effortless on stage, while stark contrasts in choreography and staging propels the storyline forward and conveys both the relationships between characters and their underlying emotions. This magical fairy-tale tells a beautiful love story and provides pure entertainment which appeals to audiences young and old. -- www.bostonballet.org
