Saint Louis Symphony Offers Online Music Education

The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) recently introduced educational, interactive video presentations that can be accessed via the orchestra’s website.

The SLSO E-Symphony Series features members of the orchestra playing and discussing music, with each video designed for specific grade levels with a focus on musical concepts such as “The Role of Pitch in Music.”

The SLSO E-Symphony Series launched two educational videos online in mid-September with plans for additional videos to be released throughout the school year, culminating in a total of 10 video lessons. Each video encourages student participation and discussion, and teachers and students are invited to share their thoughts and ask questions of the musicians via e-mail. The content of the lessons is designed to fulfill National and Missouri MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) standards. All the videos are accompanied with lesson plans and suggested activities, which are available for download. The first two video lessons may be accessed at www.slso.org

Local teachers and the SLSO’s Education and Community Partnership staff worked closely to develop programs that combine music and cross-curricular elements. Many of the videos will concentrate on the connection between music and storytelling and feature a selected story book.

The SLSO E-Symphony Series was made possible in party by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The SLSO emphasizes that the on-line program is not meant to replace the live experience of music education in the classroom or in the concert hall, but may serve as a supplement to in-class instruction and as a means to make SLSO musicians more accessible throughout the St. Louis region and beyond.

The Education and Community Partnership Program makes the SLSO an integral part of the community, sharing the gift of music with tens of thousands of people throughout the St. Louis region with more than 250 free events each year.

The Orchestra’s broad-based efforts to interact with the community include over 100 in-school classes, education concerts in public and private schools and at Powell Hall, IN UNISON Programs at over 30 African American churches, chamber music concerts in various local venues, and Senior Reach events at retirement communities. -- www.slso.org
