Scottish Opera presents The Secret Marriage, another highly entertaining production from the creative team behind Cinderella - which sold out venues all over Scotland and enjoyed a successful run at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.
Scottish Opera’s production of The Secret Marriage features several debuts: the first time the company has ever performed the opera; the first main-stage production by director Harry Fehr; and the first time Scottish conductor Garry Walker has conducted an opera for the company.
It’s also the first appearance for Scottish Opera by American tenor Matthew Garrett, BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2005 finalist Wendy Dawn Thompson, Quirijn de Lang (recently seen in the ENO’s adaptation of David Lynch’s Lost Highway) and Dutch soprano Renate Arends. Returning to the company for The Secret Marriage are Scottish singer Rebecca Bottone (whose last performance with Scottish Opera was in Seraglio) and Andrew Slater as Geronimo.
Sung in English, The Secret Marriage is a comic whirlwind of deceit, rivalry, fickle affections and secret nuptials. One of the most charming examples of Italian operatic comedy, this is a rare chance for audiences to see Cimarosa’s most famous work.
Performed in real time with a beautifully designed set, this production of The Secret Marriage features fabulous costumes as well as some gorgeous singing from a strong cast.
The company will also present Scottish Opera Unwrapped – an hour long, free introduction to opera – on Friday 21 November (Edinburgh Festival Theatre). Presented on an alternative night to performances, Unwrapped gives new audiences and interested opera attendees a fascinating chance to get a glimpse into each new production with cast members and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera. -- www.scottishopera.org.uk
