Opera For School Children Accepts Reservations

Boston Lyric Opera is excited to announce its popular Opera for School Children program for Spring 2009. The lively production, a condensed version of Mozart’s adventurous and colorful rescue opera, The Magic Flute, will be available to students in grades 3-8 in schools throughout New England.

Reservations are being accepted now by BLO’s Education & Community Programs Department. Last year’s production of Hansel and Gretel was seen by over 22,000 students across the region, and was so well-received that faculty and administrators have begun asking already about this season’s schedule.

The one-hour performances for young audiences are sung in English, fully staged with sets, costumes and lights, and offer up-close-and-personal access to “the Olympics of singing.” Teachers can use The Magic Flute in their classroom as a multidisciplinary learning tool. A purchase of 15 or more tickets includes a free study guide based on Massachusetts Learning Standards—in multiple subject areas—and a free CD. Purchases of 28 or more tickets also include an interactive In-School Preview with an opera singer (free inside Route 495). Teachers can earn PDPs through Boston Lyric Opera, a state-approved professional development provider.

In this classic rescue story, the stalwart Prince Tamino and his eccentric bird-catching sidekick Papageno embark on a fairy tale quest to save Princess Pamina, the lovely daughter of the evil Queen of the Night. Filled with breathtaking music and a healthy dose of comedy, The Magic Flute celebrates the triumph of courage, truth, and wisdom over the world of darkness and trickery that looms forebodingly around the corner.
