The Minnesota Opera has added three performances of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville to its Spring schedule. In addition to the previously announced performances on April 11, 14, 16, 18 and 19, the company has engaged another cast of principal singers for performances on Wednesday, April 15 and Friday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m., and a 2:00 matinee performance on Saturday, April 18.
The three added shows create 5,262 more seats for the public, including both the premium orchestra seats (usually not available to nonsubscribers) and the very popular $20 tickets (currently sold out for other shows this season).
The Barber of Seville is the perfect opera for first-time opera-goers, who will be familiar with a certain cartoon rabbit’s rendition, or with its most famous aria: “Figaro, Figaro, Figarooooo!” The opera tells the story of Figaro—the clever barber of Seville—as he helps the dashing Count Almaviva win the beautiful Rosina from the clutches of her wily old guardian, Dr. Bartolo, and the shenanigans that ensue.
Re-imagined by director Kevin Newbury for its final revival, The Minnesota Opera’s production of The Barber of Seville is conducted by Robert Wood. John David Boehr leads as Figaro during our added performances, with Julie Boulianne as Rosina, Brad Benoit as Count Almaviva, and Wojciech Bukalski as Dr. Bartolo. Our previously announced performances feature James Westerman as the irrepressible Figaro, Allyson McHardy as Rosina, Victor Ryan Robertson as Almaviva, and Dale Travis as Bartolo. -- www.mnopera.org
