Phoenix Dance Theatre is one of Britain's leading contemporary dance companies which tours nationally and internationally and returns to the Grand this November with a stunning repertoire of five international dance works for the company's only North West date!
Javier De Frutos' Blue Roses is a visually beautiful and wittily choreographed work inspired by Tennessee William's The Glass Menagerie. Five dancers perform to the innate musicality of the playwright's own voice creating an emotionally charged work that is both mesmerising and engrossing.
Jose Limon's Chaconne and The Moor's Pavane offer a rare opportunity to experience two hugely influential works in the development of contemporary dance. Created in the 1940s, Chaconne is a virtuoso male solo piece performed to J S Bach's profoundly moving Partita in D minor for violin. Shakespeare's Othello is the inspiration for The Moor's Pavane, often described as one of the greatest works of twentieth century modern dance. Four sumptuously costumed dancers skilfully evoke the sheer emotion and drama of the play through the unlikely vehicle of a courtly dance. Watch and be amazed.
In Jane Dudley's Harmonica Breakdown, a lone female dancer embodies the Black struggle for survival during America's Great 1920s Depression. Performed to Sonny Terry's soulful harmonica music, this short but exquisitely choreographed work is a real gem.
And cervaNtes by Ana Lujan Sanchez takes Cervantes' biography of Don Quixote as the inspiration for a duet that explores the experiences and humanity of the author. Delight in the sheer physicality of the performances.
