Printz Dance Project Performs At San Francisco

Printz Dance Project performs their breed of energetic, crisp, and intricate contemporary dance in their ninth season at San Francisco’s Cowell Theater, Fort Mason Center, Friday–Sunday, November 6–8, at 8 p.m.. This year features repertory favorites and live music — and the premiere of an exciting cross-cultural collaboration with Siamsa Tire, National Folk Theater of Ireland.

The evening program includes the world premiere of the collaboration Plus two repertory favorites, the Cowell Theater premiere of PDP’s “Point B”, and two works by Siamsa Tire:

Choreography and Dancers – Printz Dance Project, Catherine Young, and Siamsa Tire.

Background: This exciting cross-cultural project began in August 2007 when PDP traveled to Ireland to begin an in-studio collaboration. The concept began with a series of questions such as: What happens when you put two companies, from opposite parts of the world into a studio together? What happens when you integrate the music and movement impulses of such differing companies? What can we learn from each other? What cross-pollination, influence and artistic impact can this have?

Point B (Cowell Theater premiere) – We often tackle goals and life plans with a “point A to point B” strategy. Yet in being so linear in our thinking, we often ignore the signs, obstacles and detours that life throws our way. Those obstacles that we deem as “problems” can often serve as the biggest aids and lessons if we allow ourselves to take them in and see something new. The so called obstacles can often be the impetus for a new path or plan that is ultimately more rewarding, fulfilling and beneficial than the original “point B” we were aiming for. This piece investigates that concept.

Simasa Tire will perform: An Damhsoir / The Dancer: Dedicated to the memory of traditional Irish step-dancing legend Jack Lyons, who performed with Siamsa Tire until his death in 1983, at the age of 83. Undeterred by his advanced age, Lyons used the support of a chair to show his steps.

Seville Suite: This piece combines traditional Irish step dance with Flamenco. Featuring live music by Bill Whelan. -- www.printzdance.org
