New works feature scores from Milton Nascimento and Michael Gordon Two diverse programs featuring three New York premieres will highlight the 2006 winter season of Parsons Dance at The Joyce Theater.
The company, whose programs will also include several perennial favorites, will perform for two weeks, December 5 – 17. The vivacious Parsons Dance will bring two electrifying programs to The Joyce this December.
The New York premiere of Nascimento Novo, a new collaboration with Brazilian music legend Milton Nascimento, melds uplifting and highly charged dance with the sensual music of this worldwide sensation. Another New York premiere, Peel, is a new work for 10 dancers, featuring a new score from composer Michael Gordon. And One Long Move, the third premiere of the season is a dynamic solo, which will be danced on alternating nights by Abby Silva and Malvina Sardou. Other works on tap for the season include a revival of Ring Around The Rosie, not seen in New York since 1997, plus last year’s hits In the End, with music by the Dave Matthews Band, and Wolfgang, an erotically charged sextet to the music of Mozart. The special opening and closing night program on Tuesday, December 5 at 7:30pm and Sunday, December 17 at 7:30pm will feature two New York premieres: Nascimento Novo and Peel.
PROGRAM A
The company’s first program will feature two new works: Peel, a work for ten dancers featuring a new classical score by Michael Gordon, and One Long Move, a thrilling new solo which will be danced on alternating evenings by company members Abby Silva and Malvina Sardou. Also in the line-up for Program A is Swing Shift, a reflective dance for four couples, which looks back on decades of popular dance while showcasing the contemporary artistry of the Parsons ensemble, as well as the classic Envelope, Parsons’ comical work set to the music of Puccini. And In the End, the breakout hit from last season set to the music of the Dave Matthews Band, will once again set hearts – both the audience’s and the dancers’ – racing.
PROGRAM B
Highlights of Parsons Dance’s Program B will include the New York premiere of Nascimento Novo, which reunites David Parsons with Brazilian music legend Milton Nascimento (the two first collaborated on one of Mr. Parsons’ most popular creations, Nascimento). Wolfgang, which premiered last year at the Joyce, features music by Mozart and the Parsons dancers in couplings that are by turns sensuously intimate and flirtatiously hostile. Also in the line-up for the second program is the 1993 work Ring Around the Rosie, which has not been seen in New York since 1997, as well as the perennial Parsons favorite, Caught. -- www.parsonsdance.org
