Australia Post Stamps Come To Life

Visit Cobb and Co. Museum and see the stars of Australia Post's latest range of stamps, Megafauna, the giant prehistoric marsupials and reptiles that roamed the Darling Downs.

The stamps were released to celebrate Stamp Collecting Month and feature a range of megafauna, which are also included in Cobb and Co. Museum's major exhibition, Megafauna - prehistoric giants from the Darling Downs.

Museum Director, Deborah Tranter said visitors to the Museum have a unique opportunity to see actual fossils and reconstructions of the megafauna highlighted in the stamp series.

"The sites on the Darling Downs are some of the most well-preserved and extensive in Australia, and have played a significant role in Queensland Museum's research into Megafauna, the climatic impacts on Australian Megafauna and its future implications," Mrs Tranter said.

"Megafauna - prehistoric giants from the Darling Downs shows the life and death of these fascinating creatures including reconstructions of a Ninjemys oweni, Megalania and Thylacoleo and a Diprotodon optatum graphic demonstrating its immense size and how the fossils pieces fit together.

Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to experience the patience needed by palaeontologists to uncover their discoveries at a pseudo-fossil dig.

Highlights of the exhibition include:

* Diprotodon optatum, which grew as large as a hippopotamus
* Megalania prisca, the largest goanna that ever lived
* Procotodon goliah, the largest of all kangaroos
* Thylacoleo carnifex, a marsupial lion, the largest ever marsupial predator
* Ninjemys oweni, a giant horned turtle two metres in length. -- www.qm.qld.gov.au
