Patrick Reynolds and the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will open the program with Engelbert Humperdinck's Prelude to Hansel and Gretel, which begins with a simple prayer theme: (“Now I lay me down to sleep”), evoking the mystery of the forest where Hansel and Gretel will sing themselves to sleep with their favorite prayer.
Also on the program is Walter Piston’s ballet suite, The Incredible Flutist. A delightful work, the story takes place in a sleepy village as the circus suddenly comes to town with a parade. Its chief attraction is the Incredible Flutist, a mysterious snake charmer – and a charmer of women.
“The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra is proud to support the talented young musicians of the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra,” DPO Education Director Gloria Pugh states. “This dedicated group consistently presents concerts that are exciting and inspiring. I encourage anyone who has not had the privilege to hear the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra perform to attend the December 7 Winter Concert. It will be an exhilarating afternoon.” -- www.daytonphilharmonic.com
