The exhibition The Grammar of Landscape: Eleven Photographic Visions of Illinois continues at the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery. On Sunday, December 7, 2008, the second of the free First Sunday Series events will feature Chicago photographer Barbara Crane. This event is begins at 2:00 pm, will last approximately one hour, and is free and open to the public.
A native of Chicago, Barbara Crane has worked as a photographer for over 50 years creating highly formal, often abstracted images of people and the urban landscape. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a commitment to experimentation and innovation in content, technique, materials, and format. Crane taught for 28 years at the School of the Art Institute, and her work has been included in almost 300 exhibitions.
The Sunday Meet the Artist event is part of and continues in the tradition of the First Sunday Series. Each event is held at 2:00 pm on the first Sunday of the month (except January) during the run of the exhibition The Grammar of Landscape. These popular Sunday programs last a little over an hour and limited seating is provided. There is no admission charge and reservations are not required.
The Grammar of Landscape looks at wetlands, prairies, forest, plains, agriculture, the lake, the city, and industry. In a healthy environment these “units” function symbiotically to create a viable ecobiotic system in much the same way that parts of speech combine to create effective language for communication.
This exhibition maps the terrain of our state through the eyes of eleven artists with unique visions. Included are late photographers David Avison and Art Sinsabaugh, one of the masters whose iconic panoramas changed Midwestern photography; mature mid-career artists Barbara Crane, Gary Kolb, Rhondal McKinney, and Bob Thall; a newer generation including Michelle Keim, Jin Lee, Michael McGuire, and Bill Sosin; and influential performance artist Joan Dickinson—each of whom has made a commitment to the landscape through their work.
During the course of the exhibition, the Illinois State Museum will offer a variety of free programming. Please call the ISM Lockport Gallery or visit our website for additional information. Admission to the exhibition and all programs is free.
The Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery is located on the first floor of the historic Norton Building and is fully accessible to all physically challenged individuals. Museum hours are noon until 5:00 pm on Sunday and 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. -- www.museum.state.il.us
