Seattle Museum Celebrates Jazz In January

Experience Music Project|Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (EMP|SFM) is proud to present Jazz in January 2009. The two-day celebration, held Jan. 9 and Jan. 10, will feature interviews and performances with internationally-acclaimed jazz musicians and nationally-recognized high school jazz ensembles.

Jazz in January 2009 is presented in partnership with Earshot Jazz. Earshot Jazz is a Seattle-based non-profit arts, music and service organization created to support and increase awareness of jazz in the community.

The 2009 program kicks off Friday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. in Sky Church with crowd-pleasing performances by the Roosevelt Jazz Band with guest Cuong Vu and the Garfield Jazz Ensemble with guest Tom Marriott. Both high schools have received national acclaim and recognition for their accomplished jazz programs.

On Saturday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. join international percussion legend Han Bennink as he’s interviewed by Jim Wilke in the JBL Theater. And, at 7 p.m. be treated to a double bill in Sky Church with performances by trumpet sensation Cuong Vu with his bandmates, bassist Stomu Takeishi and drummer Ted Poor. Opening for the Cuong Vu Trio is local multi-instrumentalist Paul Rucker who was awarded “Outside Ensemble of the Year of 2008” by Earshot Jazz Awards. -- www.empsfm.org
