
Renowned entertainer Marvin Hamlisch returns to the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert for one performance on Tuesday, February 3, at 8:00pm. He is joined by stars of the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera, Anne Runolfsson and Gary Mauer.
Marvin Hamlisch's life in music is notable for its versatility and substance. He has won virtually every major award that exists: Three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards, and his groundbreaking show, A Chorus Line, received the Pulitzer Prize.
Mr. Hamlisch scored his first songwriting hit in 1965 with the Lesley Gore recording of "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows." He received his break as a film composer through a twist of fate. He was hired to play piano for a party given by producer Sam Spiegel who was so impressed that he asked him to score the film The Swimmer in 1968.
By 1971, Mr. Hamlisch had earned his first Oscar nomination, and a Golden Globe award, for "Life Is What You Make It" from the soundtrack of Kotch. Within two years, he made history by becoming the first individual to win three music Oscars in the same year. He is the composer of more than 40 motion picture scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin's music for The Sting. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and/or musical adaptations for Sophie's Choice, Ordinary People, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, Bananas, and Save the Tiger.

In the early 1970s, Mr. Hamlisch turned to Broadway where he created the music for the blockbuster A Chorus Line, featuring the memorable "What I Did for Love." He shared a Tony Award for Best Score with lyricist Edward Kleban and shared the Pulitzer Prize in Drama with Kleban and book writers James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante. Other Broadway shows for which he has composed are They're Playing Our Song, The Goodbye Girl, Sweet Smell of Success,and Imaginary Friends.
Mr. Hamlisch was Musical Director and arranger of Barbra Streisand's 1994 concert tour of the United States and England as well as of the television special, "Barbra Streisand: The Concert" (for which he received two of his Emmys). He served in the same capacities for her Millennium concerts. He holds the position of principal pops conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony and the San Diego Symphony.
Anne Runolfsson recently completed a 2 year run on Broadway as the tempestuous diva, Carlotta Giudacelli in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, the longest running show in Broadway history. Prior to that she made an absolute splash in Victor/Victoria as standby to Julie Andrews and Liza Minelli.
Gary Mauer was seen on Broadway as the Phantom in the Hal Prince production of The Phantom of the Opera, a role he previously performed on the National tour. Previously he starred in the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, performing the romantic leading role of Raoul. In addition, Mr. Mauer performed in the Broadway production of Les Miserables in the role of Enjolras, the revolutionary leader, a role he also performed with the National Tour in the US and Singapore.
