Following the sold-out sensation of last year's performance of Carmina Burana, the 2009 ACTEW Grand Gala presents Beethoven's ultimate symphonic masterpiece, the Ninth Symphony, on Saturday 16 May 2009.

The challenges of this emotional journey will be navigated by Chief Conductor Nicholas Milton, vocal soloists from Opera Australia and the Canberra Combined Chior.

The Gala will open with a World Premiere that promises to be truly memorable: selections from Richard Meale's stunning 1986 opera, Voss. Based upon Patrick White's award-winning novel of the same name, Meale's 1986 work helped bring international attention to Australia's musical accomplishments and is now considereded to be a masterpiece.

Boasting one of the most beloved symphonies of all time and this exciting World Premiere, the 2009 ACTEW Grand Gala will be an evening of historical significance and unbridled joy. -- www.cso.org.au
