The spectacular fairytale, "Sleeping Beauty," set to Tchaikovsky's classic score, is brought to life by the famed Russian National Ballet for one performance at McCallum Theatre on Monday, February 9, at 8:00pm.
"Sleeping Beauty" is often considered the finest achievement of classical ballet. It is a grandiose and refined blending of timeless music and graceful choreography that comes alive in a lavish theatrical setting. Tchaikovsky was delighted with the invitation to write the music for a ballet based on Charles Perrault's well-known fairytale.
A baby princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, is saved by the gift of the good Lilac Fairy who declares that the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. The fairytale, replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and a handsome prince, is presented with magical stage effects and courtly splendor.
Under the direction of legendary principal dancer Sergei Radchenko, the famed Russian National Ballet upholds the grand tradition of Russian ballet and performs the enchanting fairytale with grace and beauty. The world-renowned company has toured throughout Europe, Asia and the United States. Radchenko was the principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet before starting the Russian National Ballet. -- www.mccallumtheatre.com
