Gustavo Romero Returns To McCallum Theatre

Renowned classical pianist Gustavo Romero returns to McCallum Theatre on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 7:00pm for the first performance in the second year of a multi-year cycle featuring all of the piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven with a program of "The Complete Beethoven Sonatas, Program III."

Featured on the program will be "Sonata in C Major, Opus 2, No. 3," "Sonata in E-Major, Opus 14, No. 1," "Sonata in E-flat Major, Opus 27, No. 1," "Sonata in A Major, Opus 101," and "Sonata in C-sharp Minor, Opus 27, No. 2 ("Moonlight").

Gustavo Romero has a stellar reputation for technical brilliance and a commitment to the in-depth exploration of individual composers. Since 1999, Mr. Romero has performed numerous complete recital cycles focusing on a single composer at a time, including "Chopin: The Complete Published Solo Piano Works;" "Bach: The Leipzig Keyboard Works;" and "Beethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas." His traversal of Chopin's complete solo piano works in six sold-out concerts at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla, California, was one of the most ambitious classical musical events of 1999.

Mr. Romero has played with famed orchestras in the United States and Europe and has appeared at major music festivals in New York, Aspen and Montreaux. He has performed recitals at both the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and at Alice Tully Hall in New York. Mr. Romero's extraordinary talent has been recognized with numerous prizes and awards, including First Prize at the prestigious Clara Haskill International Piano Competition in Switzerland, the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1983, and the Musical America Young Artist of 1988, among others. Mr. Romero's recordings include Isaac Albeniz's "Change d'Espagne," a recording of Claude Debussy's "Images l el II," and a recording of Domenico Scarlatti's "Keyboard Sonatas." His 1996 recording of the complete Chopin Impromptus earned a Grammy nomination.

In the fall of 2002, Mr. Romero joined the piano faculty of the University of North Texas College of Music after five years on the faculty of the University of Illinois and nine years on the faculty of the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina.
