Discovering Ganesha At California Museum

‘Discovering Ganesha: Remover of Obstacles’ is the name of an exhibition coming to Pacific Asia Museum, California from March 18 to September 20, 2009.

The picture shows Ganesha (one in a series). By Shana Dressler. 2004. Photographic print. Courtesy of the Artist.

Ganesha, the so-called “Elephant God,” is one of the most adored and widely worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. In a series of stunning photographs, New York-based artist Shana Dressler investigates contemporary Ganesha festivals in Mumbai.

Juxtaposed with classical representations of Ganesha from Pacific Asia Museum’s collection, Dressler’s vibrant photos connect the past and the present of India while illustrating the historical legacy and spiritual signifi cance of Ganesha in Hindu society. -- www.pacificasiamuseum.org
