In a new initiative, for 2009, the Royal Observatory, Greenwich launches Astronomy Photographer of the Year. The competition has teamed up with BBC Sky at Night magazine and photo-sharing website Flickr, with entrants invited to submit their work to the site.
As the technological capability of cameras and telescopes increases and become more affordable, more and more amateur astronomers can capture spectacular images of astronomical phenomena. Photographers will be invited to submit work into three competition categories: ‘Earth and Space’, ‘Our Solar System’ and ‘Deep Space’.
There will also be a special category for young photographers: 'Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year'. The call for entries is in January 2009, and the 20 winning entries will be selected by an expert judging panel. The winning photographs go on display in a special exhibition at the Royal Observatory in September 2009.
