Rachel Whiteread At Portland Art Museum

Having exhibited at the 47th Venice Biennale and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Rachel Whiteread is one of Britain's most celebrated women sculptors working on the international stage.

Whiteread has developed various approaches to casting and impression, as both a process and vehicle for content.

She works with the empty and unexamined spaces inside and around domestic objects and materials that populate daily life, rendering negative space as positive sculptural form in a poignant and unprecedented way. The exhibition features recent sculpture ensembles and works on paper by this London-based artist.

This exhibition is part of an ongoing series of contemporary art exhibitions organized by Bruce Guenther, curator of modern and contemporary art. It runs through May 3, 2009. -- www.gagosian.com
