On Thursday, March 26 at 10:30am and Friday, March 27 at 8pm, the Louisville Orchestra presents a concert of culturally-inspired music at Whitney Hall including Anton Liadov’s Kikimora, op. 63, Tan Dun’s Concerto for String Orchestra and Pipa and Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major, op. 43.
An array of ethnic and cultural variety is shown through the grouping of these three diverse pieces. Anton Liadov’s Kikimora, op.63, is a tone poem based on a folk tale featuring an angry and brooding witch-like Slavic deity and exhibits music typical of the Late Romantic style. Tan Dun’s Concerto for String Orchestra and Pipa shows a quick contrast, with Dun’s Chinese heritage influencing the use of the pipa, a lute instrument with a pear-shaped body and 4 strings.
The work is an amalgamation of different musical traditions and periods exemplifying Dun’s wide range. Dun is also known for his Oscar®-award winning score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The optimistic Symphony No. 2 in D Major, op. 43 of Jean Sibelius adds the final contrast to a diverse and enticing program.
Outstanding young conductor Joana Carneiro is currently the Music Director of the Berkley Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Principal Guest Conductor of the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon and the Gulbenkian Orchestra. Although young, she has been recognized numerous times for her capabilities, including being named a finalist for the 2002 Maazel-Vilar Conductor’s Competition at Carnegie Hall.
Performing on the interesting and exotic pipa is world-renowned performer Gao Hong. Hong has performed throughout the world on the traditional Chinese instrument and has also been honored for her compositional merit. -- www.LouisvilleOrchestra.org
