Louisville Orchestra Plays Shostakovich Symphony

On Thursday, April 9, the Louisville Orchestra presents Symphony No. 6 in B minor, op.5 4 at Whitney Hall. Also being performed are Paul Hindemith’s suite from Nobilissima visione and Edward Elgar’s Concerto for Violoncello in E minor, op. 85, as a part of the Hardscuffle Coffee Classics and the Hilliard Lyons Classics series. Single tickets range from $25 - $75.

Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, op. 54 has a moody start, but the gloom is brushed away with a light, cheerful response. Interestingly, Shostakovich originally intended his next symphony at the time of composition to be patriotic, with a dedication to Lenin, but decided against it for fear of being persecuted by Soviet censors.

Also in concert is Paul Hindemith’s Nobilissima visione which was originally, was a ballet depicting the life of Christian figure St. Francis of Assisi. Based on the times of trial and of inspiration of the saint, the music reflects the struggle of his life. In Concerto for Violincello in E minor, op. 54, Edward Elgar follows suit with strong contrasts in style. Beginning and ending with a tender cello line, the music is clearly driven by the cello’s efforts, especially evident during the passionate, singing melody of the cello later in the work.

Cellist Matt Haimovitz joins the orchestra in Elgar’s Concerto furthering his fruitful career. At the age of 13, Haimovitz made his Carnegie Hall debut. Since, he has worked with such conductors as James Levine, Zubin Mehta and Daniel Barenboim, and counts legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman as one of his musical mentors. Haimovitz made a splash recently by embarking on a tour featuring rock and classical music in clubs and coffeehouses around the country hoping to reach a younger audience. To that end, Haimovitz will be performing at the Rudyard Kipling on Saturday, April 11. -- www.louisvilleorchestra.org
