Nordstrom, Inc., one of the nation’s leading fashion specialty retailers, will kick off the opening of its Northshore Mall store in Peabody, Mass. with an evening gala on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. The fashionable fete is expected to raise $75,000 for The Friends of Beverly Hospital, Essex County Community Foundation and North Shore Music Theatre. Nordstrom Northshore Mall opens on Friday, April 17, 2009.

Guests at the gala will enjoy lavish hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, dinner and desserts, live entertainment, informal modeling vignettes, and the opportunity to shop in the new 138,000-square-foot store.

The event, entirely underwritten by Nordstrom, will help raise funds for the signature projects of the The Friends of Beverly Hospital, Essex County Community Foundation and North Shore Music Theatre.

Beverly Hospital, established in 1888, is the leading provider of acute care, long-term care and behavior health facilities north of Boston and is consistently cited as one of the Top 100 Hospitals in the nation. The Friends of Beverly Hospital is a not-for-profit organization of volunteers that work together to build philanthropic support for projects and programs that enhance the welfare of Beverly Hospital, its affiliates and the communities they serve. Beginning in 1910 with a commitment to provide help to a patient in need, the Friends have contributed more than $1.4 million to the Hospital and its affiliates throughout their near century of service.

The Friends of Beverly Hospital will use their gala funds to support the Breast Health Navigator Program at theBreast Health Center located at Beverly Hospital at Danvers Medical and Day Surgery Center. The Breast Navigator Program provides assistance to women newly-diagnosed with breast cancer. Both the patient and her family receive guidance and care throughout the entire diagnostic, treatment, and recovery process. This is a unique program of support and educational counseling on the North Shore, and in the state of Massachusetts there are fewer than 20 professionals certified as Navigators.

The Essex County Community Foundation (ECCF) provides millions of dollars in grants to nonprofits on the North Shore, Cape Ann, and the Merrimack Valley. ECCF is a financial home for donors interested in local philanthropy, and a supporter of the great variety of nonprofits (in education, social services, the arts, the environment, and many other fields) that now add up to 12% of the local economy. ECCF will use funds from the Nordstrom Gala to strengthen the 50 leading hunger organizations in Essex County. This year food pantries, soup kitchens, and nutrition programs are experiencing up to 30% increases in needs, and theCommunity Foundation is helping them sustain services throughout the year; develop a website to connect funders, suppliers, clients, and each other; and increase access to food supplies in every community.

North Shore Music Theatre, one of the largest nonprofit professional theaters in New England and the second largest nonprofit arts organization in Massachusetts, has produced dozens of new musicals, including national and world premieres, earning it a reputation as one of the most popular theaters in the U.S. Its signature project Spotlight Awards is an annual Tony Award style program showcases and honors the accomplishments of high school students and teachers who have achieved the highest levels of excellence in musical theater. NSMT’s Theater for Young Audiences, Academy of Music Theatre, and school outreach program have reached more than two million children and young adults across the state. -- www.nsmt.org
