Minneapolis Institute Of Arts will present an exhibition named 'Earth and Sky: Traditional Dye Techniques from Africa.
The exhibition will be on view from Saturday, July 11, 2009 to Sunday, November 1, 2009 at Galleries 255 and 256.
Many African cultures embellish their textiles with traditional dyed ornamentation ranging from simple but dramatic tie-dye designs to the intricate patterning of stitched-resist cloths. Using the colors of nature—indigo, henna, mud, bark, plant materials and minerals—African artists create cloths that are used for both everyday wear and for ritual ceremonies.
This exhibition presents spectacular dyed cloths from Morocco, West Africa, and Madagascar from the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. -- www.artsmia.org
