Minneapolis Institute Of Arts presents an exhibition named 'From Durer to Picasso: Selections from the Department of Prints and Drawings'. It will be on view from Saturday, June 27, 2009 to Sunday, January 17, 2010, at Galleries 315 and 316.
An active collector of works on paper, Edith Garmezy was a founding member of the Print and Drawing Curatorial Council and a longtime volunteer in the Department of Prints and Drawings.
When Edith died in February at age 88 the entire Minneapolis Institute Of Arts community lost a dear friend. Over the years, Edith donated more than 130 prints and drawings from her own collection as well as through the Edith and Norman Garmezy Acquisition Fund.
“From Durer to Picasso: Selections from the Department of Prints and Drawings” features some of the prints that came to the museum through Edith’s generosity, including Matisse’s elegant lithograph Seated Nude, Seen from the Back.
In addition, this exhibition includes a group of Renaissance and Baroque works on the theme of St. Jerome. Another cluster of works is dedicated to Venice; these include prints by James McNeill Whistler and Canaletto.
Yet another grouping explores the landscape, ranging from Augustin Hirschvogel’s early etchings of German forests to impressionistic scenes by Edgar Degas. -- www.artsmia.org
