Of the major 19th century works based on Goethe's Faust, Berlioz's La damnation de Faust is widely considered the greatest of them all.
The Singapore Symphony Orchestra led by its Resident Conductor Lim Yau will perform this exhilarating masterpiece at the Esplanade Concert Hall on May 2.
Scored for three solo singers, chorus and orchestra, it displays all the qualities that make Berlioz so popular: brilliant and innovative orchestration, lyric and dramatic vocal writing, and magnificent choruses.
Estonian mezzo-soprano Annely Peebo will sing the role of Marguerite, with Danish tenor Sune Hjerrild starring as Faust and Russian bass Alexander Vassiliev as Mephistopheles.
Between the crashing Hungarian March of the opening scene and the climactic ride to hell, Berlioz captures vividly in his music a rowdy tavern scene, a love scene, a supernatural ballet as Faust dreams of Marguerite, a mad aria and an amazing invocation of nature. -- www.sso.org.sg
