England Opera Screens 'New Babylon'

Opera North, England will screen a film named 'New Babylon' on Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 May, at 8pm.

The UK premiere of the 2006 restoration of New Babylon (1929), one of the last great masterpieces of Soviet avant-garde cinema. The film tells the story of the Paris Commune of 1871 as seen through the eyes of a shop-girl working in the New Babylon emporium, yet is also resonant both with the history of the formation of the Soviet Union and the unceasing attraction of Russians to Paris.

Shostakovich’s first film score, written when he was just 23 years old, will be performed live by members of the Orchestra of Opera North conducted by Mark Fitz-Gerald. This rare chance to hear the score as originally conceived, alongside the uncensored, restored version of this great film is set to be one of the highlights of the RUSSIA series.

The original movie was by Leonid Trauberg and Grigorii Kozintsev. USSR 1929, 2006. This is the restoration film, produced and directed by Marek Pytel for Realityfilm in association with Contemporary Films and The Cinematheque Suisse. -- www.operanorth.co.uk
