The student orchestra of Churchill High School in Livonia will be performing under the direction of Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra Music Director Maestro Arie Lipsky on May 20 at 7pm. The performance will be held at the Churchill High School Auditorium.
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra has teamed up with Churchill High School in Livonia as part of the Symphony’s Education and Outreach program. “Orchestra Night” in Livonia will feature performances by students with Maestro Arie Lipsky conducting. This first performance will be the beginning of a long-term partnership with Churchill High School and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, leading up to Side-by-Side performances.
“It is with great pleasure that I work with this outstanding group of orchestra students,” said Lipsky. “Playing great music from the symphonic repertoire is a tremendous experience for each student, the audience and me.”
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s Side-by-Side program is a partnership with local schools in which professional musicians from the Symphony rehearse and perform together with students, sharing music stands and playing “side-by-side,” under the direction of Arie Lipsky. The program is enjoying its third year with the Pinckney Community Schools, with a Side-by-Side concert that was on May 14.
In the weeks before Orchestra Night in Livonia, Maestro Lipsky works with the students to prepare for the performance. “We’re really looking forward to this experience,” said Elizabeth Herring, orchestra director at Churchill High School. “The kids loved working with Arie [to prepare for the concert].”
The Livonia Frost Middle School Orchestras will open the Orchestra Night concert. Following that, the Churchill Orchestra’s 55 students, under the direction of Arie Lipsky, will begin their performance with St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst. Holst was a school music director and he wrote this piece in 1912 for his students to perform.
The Churchill Orchestra will continue with Cello Concerto No. 1 by Camille Saint-Saens, with soloist Candace Chappell, a Churchill High School senior. Next, the students will play Marche Slav by Tchaikovsky, educational arrangement by Dackow. The Churchill Orchestra will end the concert with Russian Sailor’s Dance from Reinhold Gliere’s ballet The Red Poppy.
“An Orchestra Night with Maestro Arie Lipsky provides student musicians with the rare opportunity to work with a seasoned, professional guest conductor to prepare a concert program,” said Laura Dunbar, Education and Outreach Director of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. “Maestro Lipsky shares his wisdom about the music, performance practice, and professional musicianship. This collaboration strengthens the A2SO’s relationship with its community and exposes Churchill’s students to a professional orchestra.” -- www.a2so.com
