Wide Open Your Ears For Melbourne Symphony

Let TV personality, educator extraordinaire and Music Director of the Victorian Opera, Richard Gill open your ears in a new Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concert.

EARS WIDE OPEN is a new two-concert initiative by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra that takes you on a musical journey of discovery guided by Richard Gill with examples illustrated live by the Orchestra.

‘Were Leonard Bernstein still with us…he’d probably have to relinquish his great reputation as a musical educator – or at least share it with Richard Gill’ Sun Herald, Sydney

“Music, in my view, is totally abstract. It doesn’t describe anything specific, especially program music, but it can evoke, suggest, imply, hint at and tantalise in so many ways.”

”It only means what you make it mean” said Richard Gill.

In this inaugural EARS WIDE OPEN concert, Gill and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra explore Dvorak’s glorious Symphony No.6, talking about the music, the meaning, the motifs and the composer, complete with illustrations performed by the musicians.

Whether you’re a newcomer to classical music or a seasoned concert-goer, this 80-minute interactive concert experience is designed to enhance your listening pleasure, opening your ears and imagination to a deeper and different understanding of the music. As Gill says “join me in unlocking the way music works as notes on a page being brought to life by musicians.”

You can hear Dvorak’s symphony, in full at forthcoming concerts in the Robert Blackwood Hall at Monash University on Friday 22 May and in the Arts Centre, Hamer Hall on Saturday 23 and Monday 25 May.

In July, Richard Gill explores one of the glories of English music, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis. -- www.mso.com.au
