Imperial War Museum Duxford brings the history of the Second World War vividly to life with the first-hand experiences of those who fought and lived through those tumultuous times.
From Tuesday 26 to Friday 29 May between 11.00am and 1.00pm, veterans representing the Royal and Merchant Navies, RAF, the Army and people living and working on the Home Front, will be chatting informally to visiting members of the public.
This is a fantastic opportunity to hear personal experiences of the war years, understand the impact of the Second World War on people’s lives and hear how those experiences still resonate today.
This fascinating event, which is part of the Their Past Your Future project, gives visitors the opportunity to understand the human stories behind Second World War artefacts and to understand how the wartime experiences of the veterans form an important part of our social history, impacting on our present and future.
On Sunday 31 May, People’s Stories of War culminates with a day of activities where visitors can chat to veterans and costumed characters, look at artefacts from the collection and gain an understanding of how war and conflict affected people’s lives through the momentous period from the First World War through to post-Second World War and National Service.
During the day, find out about the equipment used by a variety of military personnel from costumed characters representing the Army, the Home Guard and the Land Army, who will regale visitors with personal stories and astonishing wartime anecdotes.
Learn more about the experiences of children evacuated during the Second World War and what life was like on the Home Front, from the people who were there, in addition to chatting to Second World War veterans and finding out what life was like during National Service.
There will be tours of AirSpace and the chance to see First World War artefacts from the trenches.
All events are located in AirSpace at Imperial War Museum Duxford. Visitors can drop in and out of sessions – there is no need to book in advance and all activities are included in the standard admission price.
