Mark Russell Smith, Conductor
JOSEPH SCHWANTNER New Morning for the World (Daybreak of Freedom)
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3 “Eroica”
The second Masterworks concert is dedicated to heroes, both old and new. The concert begins with Joseph Schwantner’s New Morning for the World.
A symphonic biography, the narration for this piece is excerpted from the speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. This ode to a modern hero is paired with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, originally written for Beethoven’s hero Napoleon Bonaparte.
However, when Beethoven heard Napoleon had abandoned the ideals of the French Revolution and declared himself emperor, he scratched “Buonaparte” from the top of the score and adopted the more generic title “Sinfonia Eroica” or Heroic Symphony. -- www.qcsymphony.com
