This year’s Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra’s annual concert sees the SYCO performing in tandem with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) as the latter continues to expose younger talents to the big stage.
Under the baton of Maestros Tsung Yeh and Quek Ling Kiong, the concert opens with Singapura Overture, with its main theme based on the local song Di Tanjong Katong. With its quick, energetic tempo, the piece reflects the zest, optimism and can-do spirit of Singaporeans.
Other works include Suite for Chinese String Instruments, Tan Dun’s exhibition of the charming tone of Huqin, and The White-Haired Girl Suite, a dramatic work that incorporates both opera music and north-western folk melodies to ensure a fitting finale to the concert. -- www.sco.com.sg
