Pops Brings Sounds To Cleveland Pops Orchestra

No, popcorn is not allowed at Severance Hall. Even so, the Cleveland Pops Orchestra will add visual elements to the musical offerings during its 2009-10 season.

Music director Carl Topilow and the ensemble will spend its subscription season at Severance Hall focusing on movie scores, which will be accompanied by film clips projected on an enormous screen. Narrator will be Bill O'Connell, program manager and radio host on WCLV FM/104.9.

The first of the programs featuring film clips will be "A Salute to Benny Goodman, Harry James and Other Big Band Legends" at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

It will be followed by "A Night at the Oscars" (8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010); "Cirque de la Symphonie - The Encore" (8 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010); "Broadway Goes To the Movies" (8 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010), featuring Broadway stars Susan Egan and Hugh Panaro; and the 10th Annual Salute to Our Armed Forces (8 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2010).

In addition to these programs, the orchestra will present "Broadway Rocks," its 14th annual New Year's Eve Concert and Dance at 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Severance and its annual holiday family matinee at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, at the Palace Theatre in PlayhouseSquare. -- www.clevelandpops.com
