The Barbican has announced its summer and autumn programme for 2009. Major new initiatives include developing long term relationships with visiting orchestras, a new summer season of music and dance stretching out in to East London and a new co-commissioned work from choreographer Michael Clark.

Clark, who has been a significant creative force in dance for the last 25 years, has been a resident artist at the Barbican since 2005. His company will be producing a new work for this year’s Dance Umbrella programme. His inspirational starting point is the 1970s and the music of David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. It will run in the Barbican Theatre from 28 October until 7 November 2009.

Dance Nations: Roots, Rhythms & Rituals is a summer programme of international music designed to get people moving, with music and dance from around the world. Dance Nations will include many free and family events and opportunites to take part. Dance styles include tango, flamenco, salsa, samba, rhumba, swing and jazz. The series runs from 21 June – 26 July, opening with the UK debut of Cafe de los Maestros, a 20-strong Tango orquesta, the brainchild of Grammy-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla.

Also making their UK debuts are Spok Frevo, a big band celebrating the music and dance of northern Brazil and the Kasai Allstars, bringing extraordinary and spectacular drum, dance and theatre from the Congo.

Barbican Big Summer culminates in the Centre’s first summer Do Something Different Weekend, which sees a huge amount of activity centred around Brazilian and African dance music and events with an environmental theme centred on the Barbican Art Gallery’s Radical Nature exhibition. The weekend is part of London 2012’s Open Weekend, and every corner of the Barbican Centre will be filled with activity (24- 26 July). -- www.londondance.com
