Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Washington will run an excursion named Hopi Mesa Trip from September 16, 2009 to September 21, 2009.
The Hopi Mesa excursion is a unique opportunity to explore and learn about Hopi culture and artistic traditions during a visit to the Hopi Mesas in northern Arizona. The Hopi have thrived on three boulder-strewn mesas overlooking a beautiful, desolate, homeland for over a thousand years.
Leaders Debbie Drye, katsina doll carver and matriarch of Old Oraibi village on Third Mesa, and Gary M. Johnson, photographer with Arizona Highways and Phoenix Magazine will introduce participants to the people, the culture, the landscape, the arts and artists.
Our visit to the mesas includes time with local artists and artisans including silversmiths, potters, basket weavers and carvers; tours through the Museum of Northern Arizona and the Hopi Cultural Center; discussions with cultural representatives and a demonstration of dry farming; views of spectacular landscapes; the opportunity to see dances and hear music; and time to shop at Hopi galleries.
Trip is limited to 20 participants (only 5 spots remain). Participants responsible for own travel to Phoenix. Be ready to leave for Northern Arizona by 9 a.m. on Sept. 17. Travel will be on a mini motor coach to the Mesas, with return to Phoenix by evening on Sept. 20. -- www.eiteljorg.org
