Geffrye Museum Exhibits Newlyn Copper

Geffrye Museum, London runs 'Newlyn Copper' through Monday, 31 August 2009.

A small display celebrating the copper work created by the Newlyn Industrial Class, which was established in 1890 to find useful employment for the fishermen of Newlyn, Cornwall, during idle times such as the winter months.

The work has strong links with the Arts and Crafts Movement which championed the revivial of hand-crafted objects, as the range of wares on show demonstrates. Both typical and more exceptional and rare examples are characterised by their handmade appearance and decoration with fish and shells inspired by the sea.
