Local artist Felicia Olin was inspired by Vachel Lindsay's poem "Lincoln" when she designed the 3-foot-tall fiberglass hat that is displayed on the porch of the Illinois State Museum.

Artist's statement: "I loved his poem simply titled ‘Lincoln’ for its magical imagery and the beautiful comparison of the prairie fire to the freeing of the slaves. We sometimes need to burn away old ideas with an act of danger in order to make a better world for all. The fire allows fresh grass to grow fresh ideas."

Hats Off to Mr. Lincoln is an initiative of the Springfield Rotary Clubs in celebration of the Lincoln Bicentennial.

This hat at the Illinois State Museum is generously sponsored by the Illinois Education Association, supporting public education and representing 133,000 educators throughout Illinois. The hat will be on display until at least the end of September. -- www.museum.state.il.us
