A moving tale of marital crisis and sexual guilt, Janacek’s intimate, intense love story is a perfect blend of lyric music and drama coming to Scottish Opera, UK.

Within two years of completing The Adventures of Mr Broucek, the composer embarked on this extraordinary operatic masterpiece, inspired by his love for a much younger woman.

Torn between her love for a younger man and what she knows to be her duty as a wife, Katya Kabanova examines the private horror and public shame of an unhappily married woman living in a claustrophobic Russian community. When her overbearing mother-in-law forces her confession, Katya comes to the painful realisation that she has only one way out.

Independent choreographer Kally Lloyd-Jones makes her opera directorial debut, having recently worked with Scottish Opera on productions including Cinderella and The Secret Marriage. Scottish sopranos Joanne Boag and Nadine Livingston share the title role.

All of them so good and pious
If you want to obey your mother
I’m always wondering
Nobody here yet!
Is that you, Katerina Petrovna
Oh, Varvara! I shall die!
