The word is very much overused in music circles these days, but Southern Fried 2009 kicks off with an extraordinary double bill of two truly legendary American acts.
The soul superstar and the Mexican-American roots rockers have much more than just their iconic status in common though. Their shared love of rhythm 'n' blues is there for all to hear, but there's also a more surprising love of ragged-edged rock 'n' roll that has seen both acts embraced by the huge jam-band scene in the US.
Some of Los Lobos' finest moments involve blisteringly loud guitar workouts and Booker T's new album sees him backed by nouveau Southern rockers Drive By Truckers and Neil Young - indeed his last Scottish appearance was with Young and the MGs in Glasgow in 1996.
It's the combination of those similarities and the huge diversity of sounds that Los Lobos and Booker T will bring to the Concert Hall that promise to make this one of the most memorable nights of music we've ever staged.
Los Lobos
Over the past 35 years, this East LA quintet has assembled a body of work diverse enough to cripple most bands and to captivate fans worldwide. Few bands are as eclectically unpredictable as Los Lobos - the band has notched a US number one single with La Bamba, won 3 Grammys, sold millions of records and shared stages with Dylan, The Clash and U2 amongst many others, while veering from blues, hard rock, soul, Latin, rockabilly, jazz, psychedelia and Mexican traditional music as the fancy takes them.
"A trip round their neighborhood becomes an epic voyage through exotic Americana, sly funk and raw blues." Daily Express
"With the excepton of U2, no other band has stayed on top of its game as long as Los Lobos' golden blend of blues, R&B, cumbia and barrio rock'n'roll" Rolling Stone
"Los Lobos are one of the best live bands on the planet" The Independent -- www.horsecross.co.uk
