Denver Museum Kicks Off Mixedmedia Series

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) kicks off Friday night with its mixedmedia event series Untitled on Friday, July 31, from 6 to 10 pm with Untitled #23 (Old School). Combining music, detours, art making, munchies and a cash bar, the final Friday of the month gets started at the DAM. Witness a fashion throwdown, relive your awkward years with school photos and test your art history skills.

The Fabric Lab presents an old-fashioned style competition, Style Wars. Local designers are armed with one model, one assistant and one rack of items including recycled clothes, raw materials and everyday objects. They will have minutes to create a high-fashion look to send down the runway. Local experts are looking for styling, avant and ready wear in the winner’s look. Meanwhile, the crowd can kick it with boys and girls moving to the beats.

Gigbot brings its photobooth for classic school pictures with a twist. We’ll provide the props, lights and nifty accessories, guests must bring the attitude. Visitors are encouraged to rock an old school look including flannel, high-tops and tracksuits. In the galleries, Angelica Daneo, painting and sculpture curator at the DAM, takes guests on an epic ride through school after school of art history. Pull on your stone wash for a rad trip through the DAM’s collection. The encyclopedia challenge puts visitors to the test. They can find out where they rank amongst art historians, critics and other art-world characters.

Local performers will provide the entertainment. DJs Jason Heller, the Postman and Wigdan Giddy put out fresh tracks all night long. Dance group Team Firefox sets the mood with the promise to kick, dunk, sashay, leap and squat to the beat. Buntport Theater presents a new segment of the Joan and Charlie Show, the remix.

The final Friday of the month, the Denver Art Museum feels less like a field trip and more like a night out. The series runs through September 2009 with new themes, activities and bands each month. This season includes August Untitled #24 (Crossbones) where guests can explore their morbid side and September Untitled #25 (Herd) rounds everyone up for collaborative art making. www.denverartmuseum.org
