London Theatre Exhibits Motley Theatre Design

National Theatre, London will run an exhibition named 'The Motley Theatre Design Course Exhibition 2009' from Wednesday 22 July - Saturday 25 July, 11am-8pm and Sunday 26 July, 11am-4pm.

The exhibition showcases a selection of theatre designs by this year's eleven students, and is an opportunity to view the process behind designing for the stage. It is in the National Theatre’s Paint Frame (the entrance is near the Cottesloe Theatre) and entry is free.

Over the last year each student has collaborated individually with professional theatre directors to complete the set and costume designs for five plays and an opera. Set in a variety of venues ranging from The Royal Court, NT and the Grand Theatre Leeds to The Young Vic, Lyric Hammersmith and The Arcola, a collection of their designs will be on view at the exhibition, which include: The Linden Tree, In the Jungle of Cities, The School for Scandal, Julius Caesar; a new play by David Eldridge, Robert Holman and Simon Stephens, and the opera, Lulu.

The Motley Theatre Design Course, is independently run and recognized internationally for the quality of its teaching and graduates, having provided the theatre, film and television industries with many talented designers including Paul Brown, Patrick Burnier, Alexander Byrne, Tom Cains, Es Devlin, Penny Hadrill, Gemma Jackson, Anthony McDonald and Ultz.

Currently based in a studio behind the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, the course is lead by the theatre designer Alison Chitty (OBE) and taught by practicing theatre professionals. This year these have included: John Burgess, Paul Miller, Robert Carson, Mike Leigh, John Fuljames, Ann Curtis, Tim Meacock, Lindsay Posner and Simon Usher. -- www.nationaltheatre.org.uk
