In Yer Space is a Blackpool theatre company consisting of past and present students of Arnold School. The students will perform John Godber’s award-winning play Teechers in the Lawrence House Studio at the Grand Theatre from Wednesday 9th September to Friday 11th September.
Fast-moving, inventive and hugely entertaining, Teechers colourfully conjures up life at a modern comprehensive school, as we chart a drama teacher's precarious progress through two terms of recalcitrant pupils, cynical colleagues and obstructive caretakers.
John Godber’s innovative play looks at the British educational system in the mid 1980s with a twist of controversy and humour. Teechers revolves around drama teacher Mr Nixon and three of his students, Salty, Gail and Hobby. Usually played on stage by three actors who take on the role of 20 characters with nothing more than a table and chair providing the various settings in and outside a comprehensive school hall, actors also use plastic noses and glasses and wigs to help with the character differentiation.
The play cleverly highlights the differences between state and private education and the lack of education funding in a subtle manner, whilst concentrating on the difficulties facing teachers and the fun and frolics of teenage pupils.
This poignant and very funny production from In Yer Space makes a welcome return to the Lawrence House Studio after sell-out performances in Buxton and Keswick.
Since forming in 1999, In Yer Space theatre company has built a reputation for developing and showcasing young talent through the presentation of challenging work with a cast made up of current and former pupils of Arnold School, many of whom are aiming to move on to drama school and a professional career in the performing arts. -- www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk
